Description of current work: I primarily work on the morphological systematics of the Loricariidae, and I concentrate on a new subfamily (currently being described and revised with Roberto Reis and Edson Pereira) and the Hypostominae (which now includes the former Ancistrinae). Current revisions nearing completion include Lasiancistrus, Peckoltia, Hemiancistrus and related genera. I am also working on the molecular phylogenetics of the Hemiancistrus annectens group and am revising this group (with Justin Evans) and moelcular phylogeny of loricariids (with Michael Hardman). Fieldwork for all fishes has recently been completed in Guyana and Venezuela. Specimens are largely held at Auburn University’s fish collection.. I am also a Co-PI on the NSF-funded All Catfish Species Inventory that seeks to describe all species of catfishes and that provides funding for researchers the world over to complete this task. Please visit the ACSI website at: http://clade.acnatsci.org/allcatfish/. In non-catfishes, I am elevating the Atherinopsid Labisesthes vanhyningi (with David Werneke) and describing the southern population of the cyprinid Notropis buccatus (with Paul Pera) as a new species.

Title: Dr.
California Academy of Sciences
Email: weschmeyer@calacademy.org
Homepage: http://www.calacademy.org/research/ichthyology
Description of current work: Not yet updated since last Newsletter. (1) We continue to enter data in the Catalog of Fishes database. Currently we are going through the 2003 "Check List of Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America" species-by-species. This large, important work has established or changed the status (valid, synonym) of hundreds of species. A new internet version probably will be posted in December 2003. (2) The "Annotated Checklist" project was continued, and the first CD was completed and all articles in it are online at www.calacademy.org/research/ ichthyology/annotated, with 2 more expected late in 2003/early 2004 (see Announcement section). A new 6 month grant was received to prepare a "draft list of available names in Ichthyology". Initially this list will include available names, unavailable names, and incertae sedis names, and it will be output from the Catalog of Fishes database. This is to take advantage of Article 79 in the 1999 Code, but the process is lengthy, and it involves consensus on the part of ichthyologists. Our first task is to post the list and let people examine it and question anything in it. We believe we can purge from Ichthyology thousands of unavailable generic and specific names that have no information content (and are clutter for all intents and purposes, including nomina nuda, names mentioned in passing, etc.). Additional programming will take place in December, and the list posted by mid-2004. We will see what responses we receive. We anticipate corrections and comments (some critical). Then the list would go to a group of societies or one society, and a proposal made to the International Commission. For available names, this list would fix the names (spellings), authorship, date, bibliographic reference, and types for species. Once approved, any newly found old names or earlier references, etc., are rejected. How typos and small errors are to be corrected subsequently is not addressed in Art. 79. Of all large disciplines, we probably are the closest to being able to prepare such a list. See Article 79 for more details. It is worth a try, but it will take more research in old literature and consensus building on such subjects as how to spell certain author names. (3) The Academy in Golden Gate Park closes at the end of 2003, and nearly all of the buildings will be demolished. The move to a large building on Howard Street in downtown San Francisco will begin in early 2004 for a period of about 4 years. We will be somewhat crowded, but all specimens will be available. Please see the announcement of the move in the Announcement section. We are preparing for the move at this time. (4) I plan to concentrate on the database project, and hope to find additional funding for more Annotated Checklists, but even without funding or until we find more funding, I anticipate I can work with authors on a few families at a time

Description of current work: I am involved in an EC sponsored project, ECOCARP, and now working mainly with (1) systematics of the Chinese cyprinid fishes Zacoo, Saurogobio, and Hemibarbus (Cyprinidae); (2) ichthyofauna of Hunan Province; and (3) freshwater fishes of Guangxi Province. This year I did two collecting trips in China, one in Guangxi Province, one in Beijing area. The first trip lasted for about four weeks and was interrupted due to the outbreak of the SARS. The second trip ran only for a week or so, and the collection was small both in terms of species number and specimen amount. Works on the Burmese cyprinids continued. A manuscript on Burmese Garra (c/w Sven Kullander) is soon completed. Besides all the above mentioned, my long term project is a phylogenetic analysis on all danionin or rasborine species

Other projects include phylogenetic relationships of the Centrarchidae (in collaboration with Dr. Richard Mayden) and atherinopsid silversides (in collaboration with Dr. Barry Chernoff).

Description of current work: I have several ongoing research projects. Currently, I am working on the the comparative osteology and systematics of carangid fishes with Dave Johnson. In particular, we are studying the skeletal structure and development of the gill arches in this family. I am also working on various aspects of the skeletal anatomy of apteronotid fishes in collaboration with Cristina Cox Fernandes and others. I am also continuing work on a long term project on the comparative anatomy (particularly osteology) and phylogenetic systematics of fossil and living Acipenseriformes, in particular the genus Acipenser, in collaboration with Lance Grande and Willy Bemis. Other groups that I also have been working with lately include Lobotes, Ptilichthys, and osteoglossomorphs.
